Cat flap installation

A well-fitted cat flap gives your cat freedom without draughts or a battered door. We install cat flaps as part of our [property maintenance](/services/property-maintenance) work.

Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm

Fitting into timber and composite doors

Timber doors are the simplest home for a cat flap: the opening is marked out, cut cleanly and the flap screwed in place with a neat finish on both faces. Composite doors can usually take a flap too, though the cutting needs more care to keep the skin and core intact and the finish tidy.

Panelled doors need a moment of thought about which panel the flap sits in, since cutting through a moulding or a joint weakens the door and looks wrong. We mark out the position with you before any cutting starts.

The flap is positioned at the right height for your cat and clear of any panels, locks or glazing bars in the door.

Glass doors and windows need a glazier

If you want a cat flap in a glass door or window, that is a job for a glazier rather than a carpenter, since glass and sealed double-glazed units cannot simply be cut on site. A glazier can supply a new unit with the opening made in the factory, and we are happy to say so honestly rather than attempt something outside our trade.

Once the new glazed unit is in, we can fit the flap itself and make good any surrounding timberwork, so the job still finishes with us even if the glass part goes elsewhere.

Cat flaps through walls

Where a door is not an option, a cat flap can go through an external wall with a tunnel liner. It is a bigger job than a door fitting, since the wall has to be cored and made good inside and out, but it suits utility rooms and kitchens where the door position does not work.

  • Timber and composite door installations
  • Through-wall installations with a tunnel liner
  • Microchip and locking flaps fitted
  • Old flaps replaced or removed and made good

Choosing the flap

Basic four-way locking flaps suit most homes, while microchip flaps only open for your own cat, which keeps neighbouring cats and wildlife out. We fit flaps you have bought or advise on a suitable model for the door and your cat.

If the door itself needs attention at the same time, such as easing or adjustment, our door trimming and internal doors pages cover that work.

Booking an installation

Have the flap on site or ask us to supply one. Request a free quote or call 07735 852901.

Most door installations are finished in a single short visit, and the flap is tested with the door opening and closing properly before we leave, so your cat can start learning it straight away.

Common questions

+Can you fit a cat flap in a glass door?

No, glass doors and windows need a glazier, since glass and sealed double-glazed units cannot be cut on site. A glazier supplies a new unit with the opening made in the factory.

+Can a cat flap go in a composite door?

Usually, yes. The cutting needs more care than timber to keep the door's skin and core intact, but most composite doors can take a flap neatly.

+Is a microchip cat flap worth it?

If neighbouring cats or wildlife come in through a standard flap, a microchip flap solves it by opening only for your cat. For a single-cat household with no visitors, a basic locking flap is fine.

+Can you remove an old cat flap and repair the door?

Yes. An old flap can be removed and the door made good, or a new flap fitted in the same opening if the sizes are compatible.
