New doors into existing frames
Most internal doors can be fitted into the existing frame and lining without any building work. We take the old door off, measure the opening carefully and plane or trim the new door so it hangs square with an even gap all round.
Swapping a single door or a run of several is a straightforward part of our wider carpentry work, and the time it takes depends mainly on how many doors are involved and whether the openings are standard sizes.
When the lining needs replacing
Sometimes the frame itself is damaged, out of square or the wrong size for a new door, and the lining has to come out as well as the door. We fit new linings, stops and architrave so the whole opening is sound, not just the door hanging in it.
This takes a bit longer than a straight swap, but it means the finished door closes properly instead of being forced to fit a poor frame.
Hanging, hinges, latches and handles
We hang doors on new hinges cut cleanly into the frame and door edge, fit latches or locks accurately, and attach handles so everything lines up and operates smoothly.
If you already have handles or a particular latch you want kept, we are happy to refit them onto a new door rather than supplying new ones.
Doors that stick, drop or won't close
A door that used to close fine and now catches on the frame is often a sign of the house settling slightly or humidity swelling the timber. In many cases the existing door can be planed and re-hung rather than replaced, which our guide to a sticking door explains in more detail.
If the hinges have worn or the screws have pulled out of the frame, we repair or replace them so the door sits properly again rather than just papering over the problem.
Undercutting doors for new flooring
Fitting new carpet, laminate or engineered wood often raises the floor level enough that doors start to catch on the way open. We take doors off, trim the bottom edge evenly and re-hang them so they clear the new flooring with the right gap.
It is worth having this done as soon as the flooring goes down, since a door dragging on new flooring will scuff it within weeks.
Matching architrave and a painted finish
Where new architrave is needed around a door, we match the profile used elsewhere in the house wherever we can, which our skirting and architrave service covers in full.
Once a door is hung and any architrave is fitted, it needs filling, sanding and a coat or two of paint or stain to finish it off properly. Micky can complete the painting and decorating straight after the carpentry so you are not left with bare timber.
Doors for different rooms
Internal doors take different amounts of wear depending on where they are. A kitchen or bathroom door gets opened dozens of times a day and often needs a slightly more robust latch, while a study or bedroom door can be lighter and quieter to close.
We cover homes in Rickmansworth, Chorleywood, Pinner and Gerrards Cross, and the aim in each case is the same: doors that close properly, look tidy and do not rattle in the frame.
What we don't cover and what you can supply
We fit and adjust standard internal doors, but we do not supply or fit fire doors or certify fire door installations, which need specific testing and compliance that falls outside our work.
You are welcome to buy your own doors and have us fit them, or we can supply doors as part of the job. Call us on 07735 852901 to talk through what you need and we will give you an honest price either way.
Whether it is one door or a whole house of them, we price the job properly before we start so there are no surprises once the work is under way.
We can also advise on the best door style for a room, whether that is a solid panelled door for a bedroom or a lighter, glazed door to bring natural light into a dark hallway.
