A toilet that keeps running
A cistern that never quite stops filling usually has a worn flush valve seal or a faulty fill valve. Water trickles constantly from the cistern into the bowl, which is easy to ignore but adds up on a metered supply and tends to get worse.
A quick way to confirm it is to put a sheet of toilet paper against the back of the bowl above the waterline; if it sticks, water is trickling down from the cistern even when nobody has flushed.
Both parts are replaceable without changing the toilet, and most running cisterns are fixed in a single visit once the right valve is identified.
Leaks at the base of the toilet
Water appearing around the bottom of the pan points to a failed seal where the toilet meets the waste pipe, or a pan connector that has perished or been disturbed. This kind of leak needs proper attention, because water escaping here is not clean and will rot a timber floor quietly over time.
The fix is to lift the toilet, renew the seal or connector and refit the pan securely, then check the flush thoroughly before sealing around the base.
Other common toilet repairs
Beyond running cisterns and base leaks, the everyday jobs include flush buttons and handles that no longer work, cisterns that fill slowly or noisily, loose or broken seats, and pans that rock because the fixings have corroded.
Many of these share the same handful of parts, so a toilet with two or three niggles can usually have them all sorted in one visit rather than living with a bathroom that only half works.
- Running and slow-filling cisterns repaired
- Flush valves, fill valves and syphons replaced
- Leaks at the base resealed properly
- Seats, hinges and flush buttons renewed
Repair or replace the toilet?
Most toilet faults are parts failures, and a new valve or seal gives an otherwise sound toilet years more life. Where the pan is cracked, the cistern is badly stained inside or you simply want a modern dual-flush replacement, we can fit a new toilet and dispose of the old one by arrangement.
Booking a toilet repair
A running toilet is worth fixing before the water bill notices. Request a free quote or call 07735 852901. For other plumbing niggles, see tap repair and replacement.
Where a toilet has been leaking for a while, the floor around it may need attention once the leak is fixed. Swollen chipboard, stained grout or loose vinyl can all be repaired or made good as part of the same job.
