Bathroom extractor fan installation

A bathroom without decent extraction ends up with mould on the ceiling and peeling paint. We install and replace extractor fans as part of our [electrical](/services/electrical) work.

Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm

Why extraction matters

Every shower puts warm, moist air into the room, and without somewhere for it to go it condenses on the coldest surfaces: the ceiling, the window reveals and the grout. Over time that means black mould spots, blistered paint and a room that never quite smells fresh.

A properly sized extractor fan, vented to the outside rather than into the loft, clears the moisture before it can settle and keeps the bathroom healthier and easier to maintain.

Replacing a tired or failed fan

Older fans get noisy, weak and clogged with dust until they move almost no air at all. Replacing like for like is usually a straightforward swap, and a modern fan is noticeably quieter and more effective than the unit it replaces.

If the existing fan vents into the loft rather than outside, that is worth putting right at the same time, since it simply moves the moisture problem above your ceiling.

A fan that has stopped altogether is not always dead. Sometimes the motor has failed, but often the fan is so choked with dust and fluff that it cannot turn freely, and a thorough clean brings it back. We check before quoting for a replacement.

Fitting a fan where there was none

A new installation means choosing the position, cutting or coring the vent route through the wall or to the soffit, fitting a grille outside and wiring the fan in safely. Fans can run from the light switch, a separate switch or a humidistat that switches itself on when the room gets steamy.

All electrical work is carried out by an NICEIC registered electrician, and any making good to the ceiling or wall can be finished and painted as part of the same visit.

  • Bathroom and ensuite extractor fans fitted
  • Kitchen and utility room extraction
  • Fans vented outside with a proper grille
  • Timer, humidistat and pull-cord options

What affects extractor fan cost

The cost depends on whether it is a like-for-like swap or a new installation, the route the venting has to take, the type of fan chosen and how much making good is needed afterwards. A home visit gives you a firm quote.

If mould has already taken hold on the ceiling or around the window, the fan solves the cause but not the marks. The affected paintwork can be treated and repainted once the extraction is sorted, so the room is properly finished rather than half fixed.

Common questions

+Can a new extractor fan be fitted where there is none now?

Yes, in most bathrooms. It needs a vent route to the outside, usually through an external wall or the soffit, plus a power supply, both of which we assess when we visit.

+Why does my bathroom get mould even with a fan?

The fan may be too weak, clogged with dust, or venting into the loft rather than outside. A replacement fan vented properly usually transforms a damp bathroom.

+Can the fan come on automatically?

Yes. Fans with a humidistat switch themselves on when the air gets steamy, and timer fans run on after the light goes off to clear the room.

+Who carries out the electrical work?

All electrical work, including extractor fan installation, is carried out by an NICEIC registered electrician.
