Alcove, recess, eaves and full-wall options
Fitted wardrobes work well in all sorts of spaces: tucked into an alcove beside a chimney breast, built across a full wall of a bedroom, or fitted under sloping ceilings in a loft room. This is one of the larger jobs within our carpentry service, and usually the one that makes the biggest difference to a bedroom.
We talk through what you actually need to store, coats and dresses, folded clothes, shoes, suitcases, before deciding on the mix of hanging rails, shelving and drawers that will suit you.
Before committing to a design, it is worth reading our guide to fitted wardrobe cost, which sets out the main things that affect price so you have a realistic figure in mind.
Measuring rooms that aren't square
Very few rooms are perfectly square, especially in older houses, and a wardrobe built to a single measurement often ends up with ugly gaps at one end. We take measurements at several points along each wall, floor and ceiling to understand exactly how a room is out of true before we start building.
This extra care at the measuring stage is what makes the finished wardrobe look like it was always meant to be there.
Scribing to walls and ceilings
Where a wardrobe meets a wall, skirting or ceiling, we scribe the carcass edges to follow the actual line of the room rather than leaving gaps that need filling badly later.
This matters most in older properties with wavy plaster or sloping ceilings, where a straight factory edge would leave an obvious wedge-shaped gap.
Carcass, doors, rails and shelving
Inside, we fit a sensible mix of hanging rails at useful heights, adjustable shelving and drawer units depending on what you want stored. Doors can be hinged, sliding or left open with curtains, and we will talk through what suits the room and your budget.
We keep the internal layout practical rather than overcomplicated, since a wardrobe that is easy to actually use gets used properly.
Working around skirting, sockets and radiators
Bedrooms often have skirting boards, sockets or a radiator exactly where a wardrobe needs to go. We can box around or cut neatly past these obstacles, and if a socket needs moving or capping off, Micky can also handle the electrical work in the same visit.
Having carpentry and electrics under one roof means you are not stuck waiting on two separate tradespeople to coordinate around each other.
Painting to finish
Once the carcass and doors are built, we fill, sand and paint the wardrobe to match your walls or in a contrasting colour if you prefer. This is covered by our painting and decorating service, so the whole job finishes in one coordinated visit rather than being left half done.
Fitted wardrobes across the area we cover
We cover homes in Chorleywood, Rickmansworth, Gerrards Cross and Denham, from Victorian terraces with awkward bay windows to newer eaves rooms in loft conversions.
Every room is slightly different, which is exactly why we measure and design on site rather than using a standard template that gets forced into whatever space is available.
We also take account of how a bedroom is used day to day, placing hanging rails and shelving within easy reach rather than fitting a layout that looks good on paper but is awkward to live with.
What to have ready before we start
It helps if the room is cleared as much as possible before we arrive, with existing wardrobes removed and the space swept out, though we can help with clearing an old unit if needed.
If you have a rough idea of budget and roughly what you would like to store, call us on 07735 852901 and we can arrange to measure up and give you a proper price, including our related under-stairs storage if you need more space elsewhere in the house.
