Bifold door installation

Internal bifold doors fold back within an opening, while pocket doors slide into a purpose-made wall cavity. Both can help where a conventional door swing is awkward, but each needs a suitable opening and mechanism. Call Micky’s Property Services to discuss whether your small domestic fitting project is suitable.

Choosing how the door should open

A bifold arrangement uses hinged leaves that fold together as the door opens. Depending on the system, pivots, guides and a track control that movement. The folded leaves still occupy part of the opening, so the useful passage width matters more than the overall frame measurement. Handles and nearby furniture also need clearance.

A pocket door moves sideways into a cassette or formed cavity beside the doorway. It avoids a projecting door swing, but needs enough clear wall length to receive the leaf. Neither option automatically suits every room: privacy, noise transfer, accessibility and the effort needed to operate the chosen mechanism all deserve consideration.

Assessing the existing opening

Measurements should cover the opening’s width, height and depth, together with the condition and alignment of its sides and head. A frame that is twisted or poorly fixed can make a new mechanism bind. Finished floor levels also matter, particularly where flooring will change after the door is fitted.

Photographs help an initial discussion, but they cannot establish everything hidden behind plaster or trim. Explain whether you are replacing an existing folding system, fitting into an ordinary doorway or considering a new pocket arrangement. This page concerns internal doors only, not external aluminium bifolds, extensions or structural alterations to create larger openings.

Pocket cavities need careful planning

A pocket cassette needs the wall thickness, clear run and fixing arrangement specified by its manufacturer. Pipework, electrical cables, sockets and other concealed items may conflict with the proposed cavity. Existing walls should not be opened or altered on the assumption that the space beside a doorway is empty or non-structural.

Access for maintaining rollers, guides and stops should be considered before the wall is finished. Fixings for shelves or other fittings must not project into the pocket and obstruct the door. Where the proposal depends on structural work, relocating services or substantial wall rebuilding, it falls outside the small fitting scope described here.

Matching the door to its mechanism

The door’s weight, thickness and dimensions must fall within the selected hardware’s limits. Tracks, hangers, pivots and guides should form a compatible arrangement rather than a collection of parts chosen because they appear similar. Manufacturer instructions determine fixing positions, permitted adjustments and any restrictions on trimming the door.

During fitting, the aim is controlled movement without scraping, derailment or excessive play. Stops and handles need positioning so the door can be used without trapping fingers against adjacent surfaces. Any soft-close feature must suit the mechanism and leaf weight; it should not be assumed to work with every replacement door.

Discussing a manageable domestic job

Send the opening measurements, photographs, proposed product details and any information about the existing wall. Mention unfinished flooring and decoration so the sequence can be discussed. Our focus is small to medium domestic carpentry, with appointments discussed for Monday to Friday rather than a major remodelling programme.

Use the carpentry hub to explore related work, or compare a conventional hinged option on the internal doors page. Call to discuss suitability before ordering a kit. An initial conversation is not confirmation that a particular cavity, opening or supplied mechanism can be used.

Common questions

+Can a pocket door slide into any existing partition?

No. The cavity needs adequate dimensions, compatible construction and freedom from conflicting services. Its suitability must be assessed before the door system is selected or the wall is disturbed.

+Will an internal bifold leave the whole doorway clear?

Usually not. Folded leaves and their hardware take up some space. Check the usable passage width for your chosen system, especially where access is already tight.

+Should I buy the door and track separately?

Only where their compatibility is established. Share the product specifications first so leaf weight, dimensions, fixing requirements and the available opening can be considered together.
