Gutter cleaning

Leaves and loose debris can interrupt the flow through domestic gutters, but access determines whether clearing them is a suitable small maintenance job. This page concerns low-rise, ladder-accessible gutter clearing only. Call to discuss whether your property suits a planned Monday to Friday visit.

Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm

A limited clearing task, not roof work

The proposed scope is removing accessible loose material from an appropriate low-rise gutter run, subject to an assessment of the working position. It does not include walking on roofs, working across fragile coverings or reaching awkward sections from an unsuitable ladder position. Photographs can help an initial discussion, but they cannot establish that access is safe.

Clearing a gutter should not be confused with repairing the roof above it. Broken tiles, deteriorated roof coverings, flashing defects and other roof concerns need a relevant specialist. No roof repairs are offered or implied here. Where the gutter position involves a high or complex roof, approach a specialist with suitable access equipment instead.

Assessing ladder access before agreeing work

A low gutter is not automatically an accessible gutter. The ground needs consideration, including its firmness, slope and available space around the ladder position. Conservatories, porches, narrow side passages and extensions can prevent safe positioning even where the overall building is modest. Nearby cables and public access can introduce further restrictions.

Ladder work must be appropriate to the task and conditions, with no need to overreach or improvise a working platform. Weather can change an otherwise reasonable plan, particularly where wind or wet surfaces affect stability. If suitable access cannot be established, the job should not proceed as a ladder-clearing visit.

Understanding overflowing gutters

Overflow during rainfall may be associated with accumulated leaves, moss or other debris, but blockage is not the only possible explanation. An outlet obstruction, damaged fitting, poor alignment or a problem farther along the drainage route can produce similar symptoms. Removing surface debris therefore should not be described as a guaranteed cure for every overflow.

Explain where water appears and whether it happens during ordinary rainfall or only in a heavy downpour. A photograph taken safely from ground level can be useful. Do not climb up to investigate or put yourself beneath loose fittings. Persistent problems after clearing need a separate assessment rather than repeated assumptions about leaves.

Boundaries around outlets and downpipes

Accessible outlet debris may be relevant to the agreed clearing task, but concealed downpipe blockages are a different matter. Disassembly, underground drainage investigations and replacement gutter components should not be assumed to form part of a simple visit. Describe any known obstruction before booking so the limits can be discussed clearly.

Tell us if a downpipe discharges beside a path, into a water butt or towards a drain that already backs up. These details help distinguish the gutter run from the wider drainage arrangement. Waste handling and protection of the immediate area should also be agreed, including where removed leaves and sediment will go.

Planning a small domestic maintenance visit

For an initial enquiry, provide the property postcode, approximate gutter height, affected elevation and clear ground-level photographs showing access. Mention extensions, locked gates and any shared route that could be obstructed. The focus is small to medium domestic maintenance during Monday to Friday working arrangements, subject to suitability and an agreed appointment.

Use the property maintenance hub to organise other modest tasks. Nearby garden work may be considered separately through fence and gate repairs, while indoor joints are covered by sealant replacement. Combining enquiries does not mean every task needs the same equipment or can be accepted together.

Common questions

+Does a low roof mean ladder clearing will be suitable?

No. Ground conditions, obstructions, ladder positioning, weather and the required reach all matter. Suitability needs assessment rather than a decision based only on the number of storeys.

+Can this include gutters above a conservatory?

Not where access would require reaching across the conservatory or standing on its roof. Such arrangements may need a specialist with a different access method.

+Will clearing the gutter resolve every overflow?

No. Damaged components, alignment issues or restrictions elsewhere can also cause overflowing. Clearing accessible debris is a limited task, not a promise to resolve an unidentified drainage defect.
