Leaking radiator repair

A leaking radiator rarely fixes itself, and even a slow drip can ruin a floor or the ceiling below. We trace and repair radiator leaks as part of our [heating](/services/heating) work.

Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm

Where radiators usually leak

Most radiator leaks come from one of a few places. The valve unions where the pipes meet the radiator can weep as washers age. The valve spindle can drip when the packing inside wears. Bleed points occasionally seep, and the body of the radiator itself can develop pinhole leaks as it corrodes from the inside.

Finding the true source matters, because water travels. A damp patch under one end of the radiator can easily be coming from the valve at the other end.

A radiator leaking from the valve

A leaking radiator valve is the most common callout. Sometimes tightening the union nut slightly or repacking the spindle stops the drip, but a valve that has corroded or whose washers have perished is better replaced. Our radiator valves page covers replacement in more detail.

If the leak appears when the heating comes on and stops when it cools, that points to a joint opening up as the metal expands, which still needs attention even though it looks intermittent.

Leaks from the radiator body

A pinhole leak in the panel itself means the radiator is corroding through, and sealants are only ever a temporary measure. The honest fix is a replacement radiator, which we can supply and fit, including taking the old one away and refilling and balancing the system afterwards.

When one radiator corrodes through, it is sensible to have the others checked at the same time, since they have all seen the same water for the same number of years. A quick look at the rest of the system while it is drained costs nothing extra and can save a second leak a few months later.

  • Leaking valve unions and spindles repaired or replaced
  • Perished washers and bleed points renewed
  • Corroded radiators replaced
  • System refilled, bled and checked for leaks

What to do before we arrive

Turn the valves at both ends of the radiator clockwise to isolate it, put a container and towels under the drip, and if water is coming through a ceiling, turn the heating off. Then call 07735 852901. If a radiator is cold as well as leaky, our guide to a radiator not heating up may help you describe the symptoms.

Getting a leak repaired

Leaks are best dealt with sooner rather than later, before floorboards and plaster take the damage. Request a free quote or call and we will get it sorted.

If the leak has already marked a ceiling or swollen a floorboard, that making good can be handled too: plaster patched, boards repaired and the decoration touched up, so the repair does not leave a visible reminder behind.

Common questions

+Can a leaking radiator valve be repaired without replacing it?

Sometimes. A slight weep from a union can be cured by tightening or remaking the joint, but a valve that is corroded or leaking from the spindle is usually better replaced.

+Is a small radiator leak urgent?

It is worth dealing with promptly. A slow drip can damage floorboards, carpets and the ceiling below over weeks, and small leaks have a habit of getting worse without warning.

+Can you fix a pinhole leak in the radiator itself?

A pinhole means the panel is corroding through, so the reliable answer is a replacement radiator. We can supply and fit one and refill the system afterwards.

+Will you need to drain the whole system?

Often only the affected radiator or part of the system needs draining. We assess the layout on the visit and keep the disruption as small as possible.
