Access can decide whether the work is suitable
Height affects how safely and practically a surface can be reached. A ground-level door is different from a frame above an extension roof or an opening over uneven ground. Restricted space, parked vehicles and the position of a conservatory can matter even when the height itself appears modest.
Micky’s Property Services discusses exterior timber that can be reached safely from the ground or a suitable standard ladder. Work needing scaffolding or more complex access should go to a specialist with the right arrangements. A picture taken from inside a room does not show those access constraints, so include an outside view of the surrounding ground with an enquiry.
Timber, render and brick are different projects
A quote for exterior timber coating cannot be used to estimate a whole rendered house. Masonry and render have different preparation, moisture and coating considerations, while previously painted brick may need specialist evaluation before another product is applied. Simply counting the visible area overlooks that change of substrate.
Our exterior painting service concerns the timber work described there, not render or masonry painting. If an enquiry includes both, make the distinction explicit so the timber elements can be considered without implying the rest is included. A clear boundary is more useful than a broad quote that does not say which surfaces it covers.
Exposure changes the preparation
Sun, rain and repeated wetting at joints can leave otherwise similar pieces of timber in very different condition. Flaking edges need removal back to a sound coating; greasy deposits or weathered bare patches need appropriate cleaning and preparation. Painting over unstable layers is not equivalent to preparing a sound existing finish.
The direction an opening faces can influence weather exposure, but its actual condition should guide the work. Check the underside of sills, exposed end grain and junctions where water lingers. Photos of the worst areas help describe the job, though an assessment may still be needed before preparation and repairs can be priced reliably.
Repairs should be identified before decoration
Soft wood, split joints or failed fixings can change a repaint into a repair project. Primer and top coats do not restore decayed timber. Some local defects may suit a defined carpentry repair; more extensive failure can require a different proposal or a specialist.
See wood rot repair options for the distinction between resin, splicing and replacement. Keep those repairs separate from cosmetic filling when comparing exterior painting quotes. Otherwise one quotation may include making the timber sound while another only includes applying paint to the surface as it stands.
Weather windows are part of the programme
Exterior products specify suitable temperature, moisture and drying conditions. Rain, dew or a damp substrate can affect when a coating should be applied. A dry-looking afternoon does not necessarily provide enough suitable time for the whole sequence, especially on a shaded surface.
Preparation, primer and top coats each have their own requirements, so the working programme needs some flexibility. Discuss access to the area between visits and how exposed timber will be protected if conditions change. Weather-sensitive work should not be promised on an inflexible date simply to make the quote look more convenient.
Compare the listed surfaces and finish
Write down exactly what is being painted: faces, edges, frame sections and any associated trim. Specify whether hinges or fittings need removal and whether repairs are included. A change to a strong colour or a different coating system may affect the required preparation and application sequence.
Indoor room costs have different drivers; our cost to paint a room guide covers that without folding it into this exterior scope. Need it sorted? Book exterior timber painting and send the quote form with photographs and access details. We can discuss whether the work fits before proposing a suitable quote.
