Cost to replace consumer unit: what affects the quote

A consumer unit quote should describe the electrical work behind the new board, not just the price of an enclosure. The number of circuits, existing condition, supply arrangements and testing findings all shape the scope. This guide explains how to compare proposals without inventing a standard price for every home.

Separate the equipment from the whole installation job

The consumer unit itself is only one part of the work. Protective devices, isolation, assessment of existing circuits, installation and testing must be considered together. A retail equipment price therefore cannot reliably tell you the finished cost of changing the protective arrangement in a particular property.

Ask what the proposed specification includes and why it suits your circuits. Different arrangements may use different protective devices and capacity for future work. A proposal should not be judged solely by counting switches or choosing the cheapest-looking box. For the installation process rather than price comparison, see consumer unit replacement.

Circuit count and protective devices

More circuits can mean more devices, connections, identification and testing. However, circuit count alone is not a complete measure of complexity. A clearly labelled, accessible installation may differ considerably from one with undocumented alterations or circuits whose routes are uncertain.

The selected protection also affects the equipment involved. Shared RCD arrangements and individual RCBO protection are not identical specifications, and other protective measures may be relevant. The electrician assesses the appropriate design. When comparing quotes, ask whether they are based on equivalent circuit arrangements rather than assuming all consumer units are interchangeable.

Faults found during assessment and testing

Existing wiring may need remedial work before it can safely operate with the new protection. Damaged insulation, incorrect connections or shared neutrals are examples of findings that can change the scope. A new board does not itself repair these issues, and a quote based on equipment alone may leave important uncertainty.

Clarify how additional findings will be explained and agreed. A useful proposal distinguishes the defined replacement work from any remedial work that cannot be identified until testing. That is different from accepting an unlimited extra charge: the reason, intended remedy and cost basis should be discussed before further work proceeds.

Access matters during assessment as well as fitting. If sockets, cupboards or rooms cannot be reached, say so early. Moving possessions and arranging access can help the investigation, but do not dismantle electrical fittings to prepare. The electrician should determine what needs to be opened or inspected safely.

Meter tails, earthing and supply arrangements

The cables between metering equipment and the consumer unit, known as meter tails, need to suit the installation. Their condition, length and route can affect the work. Main earthing and bonding are also assessed, rather than assumed satisfactory because the lights currently work.

Safe supply isolation and any network- or provider-controlled equipment can introduce coordination beyond the board replacement itself. Ask who is responsible for arranging that part if it is needed. The person changing the consumer unit cannot automatically alter every component in the meter cupboard, and outside work should not be silently included in a promise about the final scope.

Location, access and making good

Changing a unit in its existing position differs from relocating it. A move can require altered cable routes, extensions, a different enclosure position and work on nearby finishes. Even an in-place change can expose old fixing holes or decoration that the new enclosure does not cover.

Compare what each proposal says about making good and household disruption. Include any essential equipment when discussing the power interruption. A quoted time should relate to the assessed installation, not a generic promise that every board change will be finished within the same visit regardless of faults.

Testing and certification are part of the scope

Electrical inspection, testing and appropriate certification belong in the proposal, not as an assumed optional extra. Consumer unit replacement in England is notifiable work, so the applicable Building Regulations process also needs to be understood. Electrical certification and notification confirmation are related records with different purposes.

Ask which documents you will receive and retain them with the property paperwork. A lower-looking figure that omits testing or required documentation is not an equivalent offer. This page gives cost drivers only: it provides no average, minimum, grant figure or price promise, because the installation must determine the work.

Micky’s Property Services focuses on small to medium domestic work, carried out by an NICEIC registered electrician. We will discuss whether the job suits us and what information is needed before a proposal is agreed. If a future EV charger is part of the plan, mention it rather than compare quotes based only on today’s circuit list.

Common questions

+Why can similar-looking consumer unit quotes differ?

They may include different protective devices, circuit assessment, remedial allowances or supply work. Compare the stated specification and scope rather than just the enclosure or final figure.

+Should testing be included in the consumer unit quote?

The proposal should explain the inspection, testing and certification for the work. Required assessment and records should not be treated as optional simply to make a headline figure look lower.

+Does moving the consumer unit change the cost basis?

Yes. Cable routes, circuit lengths, access and making good can change significantly. A relocation should be assessed separately from an in-place replacement.
